Frequently Asked Questions About Alaska Air Ambulance Services

We offer air-ambulance and medical flight transport to and from Alaska, covering major hubs and remote communities alike.

We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Once we receive the required medical information and approvals, we mobilize as soon as weather, aircraft, ground logistics and medical staffing allow.

Our flights use fully-equipped fixed-wing aircraft configured for critical care transport. They include advanced monitoring, life-support equipment and medical personnel experienced in high-acuity transport. (This mirrors standard industry practice for Alaska medevacs.)

Yes. We coordinate bed-to-bed service: ground ambulance or stretcher transfer at origin, loading onto aircraft, flight, then transfer to the destination facility. Ensuring a seamless transition is a core part of our service.

 Typical triggers include:

  • Critical illness or injury requiring rapid transport to a higher-level care facility
  • Remote location in Alaska where ground transport is too slow or impractical
  • Need for advanced in-flight medical support unavailable via standard commercial transport

We evaluate each case with respect to medical necessity, patient stability, and facility availability.

  • Air ambulance transport is expensive and usually considered only when medically necessary, not simply for convenience.
  • We work with many health insurance providers and travel-medical policies. Coverage depends on the patient’s policy, the medical necessity, and whether ground transport was feasible.
  • If your policy does not explicitly cover air ambulance, payment and reimbursement options will be discussed during the quote process.

Typical information includes: patient condition, current facility, receiving facility, required level of care, origin and destination airports, any special medical equipment or personnel needed, and insurance details. The coordination process begins upon receipt and review of that information.

Yes — we provide dedicated transport services for infants and children needing neonatal intensive care or pediatric critical-care-level attention. The aircraft and medical teams are prepared for such scenarios.

Weather in Alaska is a significant factor. We monitor conditions continuously, coordinate with air traffic and ground logistics, and adjust the plan as needed (alternate airports, timing shifts, routing). Patient safety and continuity of care always remain our top priority.

In most cases yes — we coordinate companion travel/priorities as part of the mission planning. Please ask during arrangement, as seating, oxygen support, and aircraft configuration may affect companion availability or cost.

It’s critical that the receiving hospital accepts the patient, has bed availability, and is prepared for the patient’s level of care. We coordinate with hospital case-managers as part of our service to ensure a smooth transition.

We provide a detailed quote up front, outlining what is included (aircraft, medical team, ground transport) and any optional services. If changes in mission scope occur mid-flight (e.g., extra distance, changed destination), we communicate adjustments clearly.

  • Ensure medical records and patient history are accessible
  • Confirm destination hospital acceptance
  • Notify insurance/travel-medical underwriters as applicable
  • Prepare for the logistics of how the patient will be moved to/from the aircraft
  • Pack essentials for patient and companion (IDs, medications, brief list of needs)
  • Stay in regular communication with our flight coordination team

You may call our 24/7 dispatch line +1-800-524-7633 or submit our online transport request form. A Flight Coordinator will reach out immediately to start the assessment and quoting process.
