October is Emotional Wellness Month. The prevalence of mental health issues in the United States is one of the least talked about health problems. According to a study in Newsweek, one in five Americans have some sort of emotional health issue, from anxiety to bi-polar depression. 43.8 million Americans report having some sort of emotional health issue in any given year, or about 19 percent of the total population.
The drug problem that has been talked about the last several years in American can be directly related to emotional health. Over half of substance abusers in the United States have some sort of mental disorder. So how does one improve emotional health? While more serious cases require medication and therapy, there are things you can do for mild cases that will give your emotional, and overall health a boost.
One of the best ways to improve emotional health is to connect with others. Loneliness is a common cause of depression, and also one of the easiest fixes. If you are single, try online dating and join singles groups that will get you out of the house and in front of others. Look for activities and hobbies that you enjoy, and find other groups that share your interests. Growing your circle of friends gives you some more options to be more social and find lasting partnerships.
Finding purpose is another positive step to improving emotional health. For many people, this means joining a church that shares their beliefs. But if you aren’t religious there are lots of things you can do to find purpose in your life. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, meet others, and gain purpose.
Your personal habits also affect your mental health. Try to eat in moderation and don’t drink alcohol to excess. If you are overeating or drinking too much, you may have a mental health problem that is fueling and developing addiction. Professional help and support groups can always be a guide to helping you live a healthier life. The amount of sleep you get can also affect your mental well-being. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep every night, and develop a sleep schedule you can stick to, whether you have to work or not.
Exercise is a great way to give your mental health a boost. Regular exercise, especially for those taking medication, is the best way to releasing feel-good endorphins. Find an activity that you like to do so that you are more likely to stick with it. Another great way to release endorphins is to keep your brain active. Read before going to bed and you’ll sleep better, or play a challenging board game with friends to keep your brain going during normally slow moments.
