The post 9 Signs You Need Knee Surgery appeared first on International Air Ambulance | Travel Care Air.
]]>Still it’s not something that is easy to do. Knee replacements take a lot of rehab and any replacement should be done at the last moment. If you are considering whether or not you need knee replacement surgery here are a few signs to look for:
1. You don’t have enough relief. If medication and/or a cane aren’t working anymore it may be time for a knee replacement. Anti-inflammatory drugs usually work great, if they don’t talk to a doctor.
2. The weather affects your knee pain. If the knee shows symptoms of severe pain during rainy weather, it may be time to talk to a surgeon.
3. Nothing seems to work. Aside from medication you should see relief from knee pain using cortisone injections, physical therapy, rest or lubricating injections.
4. The morning is especially difficult. Normal slight pain just after you wake isn’t cause for alarm. But if the pain in your knee lasts each morning longer than 30 minutes you may need surgery.
5. Nightime is bad too. You may need knee surgery if you are suffering with knee pain while you sleep, or any other time you are laying down and still.
6. Age isn’t a factor, but….If you are between the ages of 50 and 80 you are more likely to need a knee replacement. Younger people who are especially athletic may need to go under the knife earlier in life.
7. Your knee changes. Knees on their last-legs, so to speak, will bow (in or out) and become very stiff or swollen. Look for visible deformities outside the knee joint for the first physical signs.
8. Travel becomes impossible. You may need surgery if you can’t sit in a car for long periods of time, or if you have trouble at a ballpark or movie theater.
9. You are changing your habits. If you are walking less, because the pain is killing your motivation, it may be time to replace your knee. Anything that limits your everyday activities and mobility is most-concerning. For example, if you have problems walking up and down stairs to the point that you avoid it completely.
If you need a knee replacement and have to travel we can help. Our non-emergency air ambulance services are available at affordable rates. For more information visit us on Facebook or contact us for a free air ambulance quote.

]]>The post 15 Steps to Avoiding Diabetes appeared first on International Air Ambulance | Travel Care Air.
]]>In America, according to 2014 numbers by the Centers for Disease Control, 29.1 million residents had diabetes. That’s just under 28% of the total population. About the same percentage of people with diabetes don’t even know it. Annually it’s estimated about 8.1 million people in the United States have diabetes and don’t know it.
Diabetes can lead to all kinds of health complications, losing body parts, and death. But you can be proactive to stave off this dangerous epidemic. Your diet and family history will help determine if you are more at risk than not of becoming diabetic. Whether or not you are high risk, you can follow these steps and you will lower your overall chances of developing diabetes.
1. Eat smaller portions. Keep meat portions to about 3 ounces per meal, and drink plenty of water before you eat to keep your plate portions under control.
2. Avoid appetizers. Additional foods at a meal add calories that can add pounds, making you more at risk for diabetes. Instead of appetizers, opt for greens, like a salad instead.
3. Share desserts. If sweets are a must for you after a meal, split it. Sharing will cut down on your sugar intake. Try to limit desserts to once-in-awhile special treats.
4. Choose the right cereal. Cereals can be extremely high in sugar. Read the box before you put it in your shopping cart, and opt for cereals high in fiber and nutrients, and low in sugar.
5. Eat cinnamon. German researchers have found cinnamon may be able to lower sugar levels in adults. Apparently cinnamon activates enzymes that help stimulate insulin receptors. Sprinkle it on fruits or dust into cereal, or even coffee. Speaking of coffee…..
6. Coffee is okay! Good news if you like your cup of joe, coffee may help stave off diabetes. A study at Harvard found people who had six cups of coffee per day had between 29-54% less chance of becoming diabetic. The bad news is you really have to love coffee. People who had just 1-3 cups of coffee had no effect.
7. Pick the right snacks. A lot of our snacking is done eating foods high in processed ingredients, fats and/or sugars. Opt for fruits and veggies as a snack instead of the junk.
8. It’s okay to eat canned fruits and vegetables. They should be a last resort, however if your food budget is small, buy canned fruits and vegetables so you don’t have to go shopping as often. Just make sure you don’t buy ones with loads of sodium or fruit in syrup.
9. Choose healthier fast food options. Several fast food chains are starting to get on the health kick. Many display calories right on the menu. Opt for lower calories meals, like grilled chicken with a side salad. Watch out for fast food salads. The big salads can be just as unhealthy as the regular burgers.
10. Develop a meal plan. Typical dinners should be 25% protein, 25% grains, 50% fruits/vegetables, and sparing amounts of dairy.
11. Watch your pounds. Keep track of your weight. If you are overweight, shedding 7-10% of your body mass will lower your risk of diabetes.
12. Move. You can walk, run, go to a gym, ditch your car and walk to the store, take the stairs, etc. Whatever you do, try to walk more. The Cleveland Clinic recommends 10,000 steps each day for the average adult. Plus, people who are active are 40% less likely to develop diabetes.
13. Relax. If you are under stress find ways to escape and relax. Stress has been shown to increase blood sugar levels.
14. Sleep enough. A Columbia University study found that men who only slept about five hours every night doubled their risk of high blood pressure, which leads to diabetes.
15. Get regular checkups. As we mentioned earlier, over 8 million Americans have diabetes and don’t know it. Go to the doctor once a year so you can understand your health and avoid diabetes, among other deadly diseases.
These are a few of our tips to avoid diabetes. Have your own tips and tricks to staying healthy? Comment here to share them with our readers, or tell us on Twitter!

]]>The post Honoring Emergency Nurses Day appeared first on International Air Ambulance | Travel Care Air.
]]>Emergency Nurses Day began in 1989. It was first celebrated in Australia, but quickly grew into an international celebration. Today the Emergency Nurses Association in the United States devotes a full week to celebrating its workers.
While salaries vary the typical emergency nurse makes between $62,000 and $77,000 in the United States. Typically an emergency nurse has near, or slightly above the salary of a regular nurse, despite being in a more stressful field. Like most health care fields, it’s expected to grow rapidly as the population continues to age and live longer. It’s estimated the need for emergency nurses will increase by 26 percent over the next decade.
Through our 35 years in this business, we have also met and had the pleasure of working with many emergency nurses to aid our trauma victims and other patients we have transported to hospitals all over the world. It’s fitting that we have the honor of recognizing all of these brave men and women for the selfless work they do in hospitals and other areas of health care all over the world. In our interactions with emergency nurses, we have found them to be the most personable of those in the health care industry. For many reasons, they need to be.
To become an emergency nurse, you have to be ready for anything. It’s one of the most disjointed parts of health care. An emergency nurse must be able to help a wide-range of people in emergency situations, and be very fast thinkers. The emergency nurse is typically the first person a patient will come across when they enter the emergency room. That means it takes a certain kind of person to become an emergency nurse. An emergency nurse has to have a calm, reassuring manner and be able to deal with the best, and worst, that the public has to offer.
While many emergency nurses work in emergency rooms and hospitals, that’s not the only place you’ll find them. We have our own emergency nurses that work with our patients on our air ambulance flights. The nurses that are a part of our family will travel bedside to bedside with our patients, making sure they are healthy throughout our flights. They work with a diverse range of clients and our flight nurses deal with different health needs and cultures all over the world. Our emergency nurses travel to dangerous parts of the country and world, in some cases in bad weather to save lives.
Emergency nurses also work in universities, in research institutes and ground ambulances. They can be found in poison control centers and crisis centers, helping people after natural disasters. They also work in the private and public sector in businesses and the military.
We can’t say thank you enough to those emergency nurses we’ve had the pleasure of working with since 1980. Those dedicated men and women have made our job so much easier, and helped saved countless numbers of patient’s lives. We also salute our own emergency nurses, who have helped thousands of our patients over the last 35 years. Please, if you have the chance, say thank you to an emergency nurse this week. They need to feel appreciated and deserve a lot of credit for the work they do.

]]>The post 8 Ways to Save on Flights appeared first on International Air Ambulance | Travel Care Air.
]]>1. Book months in advance. If you know you travel to your family’s home every Thanksgiving, don’t delay purchasing a flight. For shorter, domestic flights you should book at least seven weeks ahead of your trip. If you are going on vacation and traveling to another country, it’s best to plan ahead. The general rule is you’ll find the best price on international flights 18-months in advance.
2. Use Google Flight tracker. Google Flights is a good resource for finding the best airline deals. Google Flights will search all the airlines traveling to your destination and find the best price based on the dates you select. The engine will also give you prices on other days, to help the flexible traveler compare rates. You can even save your searches and track prices on Google Flights, to ensure the best possible deal.
3. Book on the right day. Yes, there are better days to buy your flight than others. Most experts agree buying on Tuesday around 3pm is the best time to find deals. Those deals, however may stick around until Thursday, but usually no later. Kayak is a great resource when booking a flight. The website includes a price trend box on your search and will also give you a “confidence estimator.” That means they will let you know if they think the price will go up or down.
4. Talk to your airline. Did you book a flight only to find the price dropped a few days later? Call your airline. Most airlines will give you the lowest price, but you have to ask for it. It can be daunting checking prices every day, but I’ve found savings over $100 when I’ve booked flights doing a simple 30 second search each day.
5. Use Twitter. Twitter is a great way to save on airline deals, especially if you are flying last minute. Some deals only last a few hours, making Twitter and other social media the place to go. Usually airlines will advertise them on their Twitter feeds since it’s the go-to social media for short notice information.
6. Buy one-way flights. This can be tricky. But some experts say you can save on flights by purchasing the departure and return flights separate. If you have flexibility in your schedule you can find better deals by purchasing flights one at a time, because prices vary by day and time of the year.
7. Cancel and rebook. If an airline won’t give you the lowest price check to see their cancellation policy. Many airlines will offer you a free refund if you cancel a flight. If you find a lower price and the airline won’t budget, take advantage of the cancellation policy and re-book your flight using the new low price.
8. Use an airline-friendly credit card and sign up for rewards programs. Apply for an airline credit card that will give you air miles for signing up. Using these credit cards will help for longer flights, and they are an extension of the airline’s frequent flyer programs. Building up miles may give you a free flight or some extra perks. Don’t forget to sign up for an airline’s frequent-flyer’s program if you fly often. In addition to building miles, airlines will also offer special promotions for members.

]]>The post General Questions to Ask Your Doctor appeared first on International Air Ambulance | Travel Care Air.
]]>The average doctor, according to a survey by WebMD, spends between 13-15 minutes with a patient. Depending on the health needs, that may not be enough time. However a doctor is more likely to spend more time with you if you know the right questions to ask. Obviously, your questions depend on your health needs. But there are a few general questions that you should always ask your doctor when you show up for a visit that will ensure you understand and have the best information on your health.
Believe it or not, your doctor wants questions. While studies may show that doctor’s are on a major time constraint, don’t feel bad for them. Your questions actually make their job easier, because they can get further insight into your lifestyle and body. You should start to build your own list of questions based on your medical needs. But you should always ask the following questions during an exam:
I researched my symptoms, what do you think? Most people (using sites like WebMD or Google) are coming to the doctor’s office with an understanding of what is wrong with them. However, as I’ve found, research doesn’t equal diagnosis. When I went in for knee pain recently, I was sure they were going to have to slice me open and clean out some junk. Turns out it was just normal wear and tear. But the research I found said the opposite. So understand that your symptoms will be unique to you, and asking will allow your doctor to explain in more specific details what is wrong with you.
What is this test for? Most general tests are to check your overall health (like a blood pressure test), but ask if you aren’t sure what you are being tested for. Believe it or not, doctors won’t explain much to you without some prodding. Understand the tests so you can better understand the diagnosis.
What are my alternatives? Doctors know how to treat everything from the common cold to more serious health issues. However there is usually more than one way to cure a medical problem. Don’t hesitate to ask if there are alternative options available. For example, sometimes you need surgery for a health problem, but a doctor may be willing to give medicine a chance before going forward with surgery. For more serious health needs, always get more than one consultation to weigh your options.
What should I improve on for my next visit? Doctors may give you suggestions to improve your health, but if not, ask them what you can work on. Is your blood pressure a little higher than normal? Ask what steps you can take in your daily life to lower it. Talking with your doctor about what you can control will give you concrete goals to improve your overall health.
What can I do to prevent this from happening again? Sometimes we catch the flu from someone. It happens and there’s very little we can do about it in a connected society. But prevention is the best way to keep coming back to the doctor. I talked with my doctor when he looked at my knee and he told me different physical exercises that I could to do strengthen the knee so it wouldn’t bother me as much.
Why am I taking this medication? Some people feel over-medicated. It’s true that some doctors can be quick to prescribe a drug when there are other options available. Ask your doctor about the importance of the medication you are taking so you can understand why it is necessary. Being open about your treatment will help you recover faster.
What do you do for your personal health? Doctors are always willing to offer their personal advice. A physician that practices what they preach will offer a wealth of information on how you can stay healthy. A great, healthy doctor can be a physician, personal trainer and nutritionist all rolled into one person.
What is your experience with this issue? Don’t worry about hurting a doctor’s ego when asking about experience. Medical costs are one of the largest expenses that Americans have, so you want to be comfortable with the person in charge of your health. Asking about your doctors experience ensures you are getting the best care for your health. Keep in mind, however, at teaching hospitals you will be in the care of some of the best young doctors in the business, with plenty of oversight.
Are there side effects? Today’s modern medicine seems to come with a laundry list of side effects. We’ve all seen the commercials for drugs that offer a large collection of things that may make your health a whole lot worse. Talk with your doctor about what medicine you are taking and how it can affect your body. Ask your doctor if the medication will have effects on other medication you are taking, where applicable.
What is the best way for me to lose weight? Weight issues are at epidemic levels in the United States. For most people a diet change may be the answer. For others they need to be more active. But your situation may be health-related. If you have been trying, and struggling to lose weight, it’s time for a good conversation with your doctor. They may be able to treat you medically to improve your long term odds or losing weight.
Always remember the best doctor will be happy to communicate with you in a way that you understand. While doctors are busier than ever, the doctor that you want to treat you will be able to talk with you and spend some time working with you to improve your health. Never settle for a doctor that makes you feel rushed. For more health tips please follow us on Twitter.

Shepherd Center specializes in physical rehabilitation of spinal and neurological patients, boasting one of the highest return to home/work ratios in the country. Shepherd Center is a non-profit center that has been treating patients in Atlanta since 1975. Each year Shepherd Center cares for over 6,000 outpatients and 1,500 patients.
TIRR Memorial Mermann – Houston Texas
TIRR has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report for 27 straight years, and is currently their #2 choice. One of the reasons TIRR has been so consistent is because of its research that has allowed the center to treat people recovering from brain and spinal cord injuries. The hospital also specializes in helping stroke victims, amputees, and those recovering from trauma and neurodegenerative diseases.
TIRR was one of the first rehab centers in the country. It was founded in 1959 and has grown since to a 134-bed hospital in the growing Texas Medical Center in Houston.
Spaulding Rehabilitation – Boston Massachusetts
Spaulding Rehabilitation is one of the largest rehab centers in the world. It includes six inpatient physical rehab centers and over 20 outpatient facilities. Craig Hospital – Englewood Colorado
Craig Hospital specializes in spinal and neurological injuries. Like the Shepherd Center, Craig Hospital is a non-profit rehab center that is the go-to center in the country for anyone recovering from post-trauma and congenital disability physical rehab. Most people who visit the Colorado center are from out of state, and the center has responded by providing accommodations for family who have to travel to be with loved ones while they rehab.
Craig Hospital believes in a team approach to rehab. That means you will have the support of the staff, family, community members, and others going through the same rehab. The personal care provided by Craig Hospital is unmatched in the country.
Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation – West Orange New Jersey
Kessler Institute has led the way in physical medicine and rehab for 65 years. Kessler Institute is one of eight centers in the United States to receive federal designation as a Model System for treatments of spinal cord and brain injuries. It has been ranked as one of the top rehab centers in the country for over 24 years, by several independent studies.
Like Spaulding Rehabilitation, Kessler utilizes a network of centers to find the best rehab techniques. Kessler Institute has three hospital campuses in New Jersey, plus over 95 outpatient facilities in the state.
Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago – Chicago Illinois
GudeDoc lists the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago as its top choice for rehab in the United States. RIC treats a number of different cases, like injuries to the brain and spine. The RIC also works helping athletes recover with their sports rehabilitation services. RIC also helps patients recovering from cancer, arthritis and pediatric care.
RIC is opening a brand new state-of-the-art research hospital in March 2017. The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is set to be the first transitional research hospital. The center will have scientists and other innovators, plus technologists working together to apply research in real time.

2. Transplant patients. If you need a transplant you may be able to use an air ambulance if you are unable to travel far distances for surgery. In addition….
3. Organ donations. Sometimes the patient who needs a transplant will have an organ flown by air ambulance from somewhere in the world. Air ambulances are used to keep the organs safe for operation.
4. Traffic accidents. Believe it or not, sometimes an air ambulance is able to reach a victim in a traffic accident faster than a traditional ground ambulance. Helicopters are typically flown to the scene of the accident where the patient can be safely transported to the hospital.
5. The elderly. Sometimes the elderly will use an air ambulance if they are unable to travel without medical help. Air ambulances help the elderly be able to visit family or receive the best care.
6. Bedside to bedside patients. Some patients need medical attention around the clock. If patients are being transported to hospitals or to receive home care, they will use an air ambulance to ensure medical care remains consistent.
7. Travelers. In rare cases people traveling in another country become injured and want to come home to receive care. An air ambulance will bring them from anywhere in the world so they can get better around a support system of family and friends.
8. Rural patients. In some parts of the country, and the world, there is not access to great health care. Typically people in remote areas will use an air ambulance to get the proper health care in a more populated area.
9. Disaster victims. People trapped in hurricanes or other natural disasters will use air ambulances to be rescued or for recovery purposes.
10. General travel needs. We have received calls from people who are unable to travel on their own, and need medical help. But they want to continue living their lives so they use us to travel safely. Some examples of this include family traveling to a wedding destination, last wish travel, etc.
11. Medical tourism. People shopping for the best price on a surgery globally will use an air ambulance if they need to travel somewhere for medical care.
12. People stranded. People who suffer an injury in a remote area will use an air ambulance to get to a hospital. This is similar to traffic accident victims and commonly applies to people injured while hiking or camping in remote areas.
13. People injured doing winter activities. We get a lot of calls from people who are injured in snowmobile accidents. People who wreck will often need to be transported via an air ambulance to the hospital, because most of these injuries happen in wooded areas.
14. Cancer patients. People will often travel to the best cancer centers and use an air ambulance along the journey (there or back home) to make sure they can safely visit any cancer center in the country (or world).
15. People who need Advanced Life Support. Travel Care transports include both basic and advanced life support. That means anyone who needs breathing or other vital assistance while traveling can fly in our air ambulances.
16. Spinal injury victims. People who suffer mobility injuries and need to travel can use an air ambulance (commercial or private) to receive the care they need anywhere in the world. This service is also helpful for rehab, if a patient prefers a specific hospital that is not nearby.
17. Family needs. Sometimes a family will decide it is best to have a loved-one closer to home. An air ambulance can be used if the person is medically unable to travel to the location on his/her own.
18. Burn victims. People who suffer bad burns, due to a house-fire or other fire will often be transported by air ambulance instead of ground ambulance to get to the hospital faster.
19. People needing medication. Aside from basic or advanced life support, some patients just need specific medications applied by health professionals. Those people will commonly use a commercial air ambulance to ensure they receive the care they need, while continuing to fly with the general public.
Those are just a few reasons why people call us. If you are in need of care, please feel free to request a quote from us today!

]]>The post Best Countries for Health Care appeared first on International Air Ambulance | Travel Care Air.
]]>Health care is one of the leading indicators of the well-being of its people, and its guests. Whether you are living in another country, or just visiting, health care is not equal in every country. However some countries stand-out as some of the best in the world. Here are a few of our picks for best countries for health care:
Switzerland
The only country that spends more on health care than Switzerland is the United States. Switzerland offers universal health care for all of its citizens longer than three months. It’s also some of the most affordable health care. Switzerland citizens all pay the same amount for heath care premiums, and it isn’t based on employment. Subsidies are also available for people who can’t afford health care. The low costs doesn’t lead to bad service, either. Forbes Magazine, in 2011, named Switzerland the country with the world’s best health care.
San Marino
San Marino is a microstate that is surrounded by Italy. It’s population is just over 33,000 people, however it has one of the highest GDPs per capita, and one of Europe’s lowest unemployment rates. With a lot of tourist dollars coming in, the nation has invested heavily in health care. San Marino has both free health care, and private options for those who can afford it. The World Health Organization (WHO) has named San Marino as having the best healthcare system in the world.
France
Many organizations consider France to be the model for healthcare in the world. The healthcare in France is made up of a network of private and public hospitals with full coverage for all residents. The government in France pays most of its citizen’s hospital bills through taxes. France isn’t just affordable. Japan citizens must have healthcare coverage, either via their employer or through a national program. While Japan has some of the highest living expenses in the world, that doesn’t apply to healthcare. The per-person costs are a lot lower than most other countries. Japan has some of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world. Japan also leads the world in recovery rates for illnesses. Some free services offered by Japan’s national healthcare program include hospital visits, exams and screenings. It’s one of the reasons why Japan is one of the healthiest countries in the world.
Singapore
Singapore is a very wealthy country, with a high GDP, like San Marino. The nation offers a balance between private and public options for its residents, but basic services are covered by the government. Mount Elizabeth, one of the best private hospitals in the world, has over 1,000 medical specialists. Many people from surrounding countries will fly to hospitals in Singapore for screenings because the hospitals have some of the best technology in the region.
